I've recently discovered a great little search app called Everything.
It basically indexes your drives and quite literally lists EVERYTHING! You enter search terms and you find what you are looking for. Not as powerful as Locate, but unlike Locate is updates it's database from your file system in real time, so there's no need to rescan everything to look for changes since your last scan. Also, you can search through HTTP and access those files. Portability is also extremely simple. Unfortunately, the FAQ didn't include any command switches, so I emailed David, the author.
Command line switches for Everything:
-startup
Start in system notification area only.
-connect hostname
Connect to an ETP server hostname with default settings.
-host
Start an ETP/FTP server with the default settings.
-filename file
Initialize the search string with "file".
-search text
Initialize the search string with "text".
So basically to search for anything it's as simple as this:

This is brilliant. ^^
I'm using it as I speak, actually. Loving it.
I do have a quick question, though...I haven't gotten to test it yet, but how portable is it in terms of drive letters? For instance, my flash drive is X: on this computer; however, it may be E or something like that elsewhere. Does it still work?
But seriously. This is awesome. |

Oh, and for anyone reading this who also has initial problems with getting any results from Everything...do check the type of drive that you're trying to search on. It has to be NFTS, as stated in the faq. Look there for how to convert it, too. |

Why not use the MS desktop search. It is very powerful, can find by filename or contents, etc and you just need this executor keyword:
search-ms://query=$P$ |

I still have a message "Database location does not exist" Probably I have to wait.
What skin do you use? It's very neat. _________________ http://g10.tumblr.com |

Nice software.
Two questions:
Executor doesn't return any results for me - I have to use the software itself to do that. How have you got it talking to Executor?
How have you got it so you don't need to use a keyword?
Thanks |

None. It's XP without any styles, only a colour theme.

You can't have it show results in Executor. Also, I use a keyword. |

Sorry, I just realised that the screenshots you posted are from Everything, not from Executor.
Thanks |

| Well, with my bouncing around between operating systems at work, school, and home, I've decided that NTFS volumes are too much of a pain...any suggestions for a different app that works similarly with FAT32 volumes? |

| Locate32 is far better although not as simple. You may want to head over to the forum and ask Janne about adding real time updating if that's a must have feature for you. If he thinks it's worth it I'm sure he'll integrate it if he has time. |

Agreed about locate32.
The real time updating is already asked. Just wait for it (if Janne can implement it) |
